Train at Platform Four

I chose to respond to the Train at Platform 2 brief for the individual collaboration project. The brief was very open and having enjoyed the conceptual theme of the Wallpaper workshop I felt I would be able to extend my conceptual thinking best in this brief. At the beginning of the project I focussed on connections and researched crime. The research I produced based on paedophiles, sex offenders and murderers of children was upsetting yet fascinating. I drew connections between different aspects of crimes committed and became immersed in the subject. The research that I completed throughout the project could be seen as a journey in itself as it formed a long chain. My development was spurred by prior research and morphed into a variety of different outcomes through its journey to my final product.

My development for this project was very thorough. I explored a large variety of executions to present my concept. My concept also changed throughout my development. I designed a series of stamps for my final outcome, which was inspired by the postage stamps shown in the D&AD lecture. These stamps were designed to engage children and encourage the use of the Royal Mail postal service. Stamps also link with the previous group brief for the Royal Mail. The stamps connect with the concept of a journey as the ink stamps placed over them in the sorting office show the journey they have made. My concept was to communicate to the receiver of the post a message, to use stamps as a method of communication rather than just a payment device. My outcomes were a result of a large amount of experimentation with type to self educate myself in a way to improve my typography skills.
