Over the past year I have designed a Veterinary Centre web site for a client and have worked as a Poster Designer/ Graphic Designer for Greater Manchester Police (see live briefs). Both these projects were unpaid but have been very rewarding. I have received much praise for the work I have produced for each and the most amazing parts of these experiences is that my work has actually been used. The web site will soon be uploaded to a server and I have been asked to redesign the company logo and business cards for the full time veterinary surgeons. I also hope to redesign the web site as I feel my skills are much improved since it was initially designed. The posters I have submitted for GMP are also in use within the police station for Longsight and the surrounding area. I have also done a number of small, unpaid favours for friends. These include illustrations for essays and diagrams for technical reports.
Over the summer I am hoping to receive offers of work experience or a placement. I am currently waiting to hear back from a number of companies. One of which I have a contact for is in Australia which is more promising than the others. I have applied to places such as Unit Communications and the BBC. I also have a back up placement, should I not receive any other offers, which would see me returning to America for the majority of the summer. For the first eight weeks I would work door-to-door selling books, finishing the summer by completing a month long placement designing book covers and leaflets for The South Western Company in their marketing department. I am, however, hoping to find a placement closer to home this summer.
During June I also have a fully paid three week placement which will involve teaching art and design to high school children in the Greater Manchester area. This will be an interesting if not rewarding experience and should I need to progress down my back-up career plan this would also help me. Over the rest of the summer, should all of my other plans fail, I hope to do some freelance work, using web sites such as www.rentacoder.com to find clients and spend time on self directed study and writing my dissertation.
