Summer Project 2009

When I started this brief, I didn’t know what was expected of me. I’d been drawing and animating for a year rather than exploring design elements, so felt stumped for ideas. Over the summer I worked door-to-door in America for eleven weeks, so I felt I should incorporate something related to this experience in my project. I collected everything and kept all of my sketches and hand drawn maps that I used to record sales and prospective customers. Using these maps I first attempted to create my own typeface. As I hadn’t experienced what sort of work students on Design and Art Direction produced, I was unsure if this was the correct direction to be going in so I tried something different. Had I continued experimenting with the typeface, I could have produced something quite interesting. I was uncertain and self doubting which limited my creative process. Having now seen everybody’s work for this project, I really wish I had continued creating a new typeface, as it would have made an interesting launch poster.

The map is of the USA in which each of the states is made up of it's name repeated over and over to fill in it's shape. I did this as an exercise to learn all the names of the states and it wasn't meant as a piece of design but it looks interesting. The alphabet was me playing around with handmade text and the strip image was a motivational poster I made for myself which features some of my favourite notes and pictures from the summer.
