disruption [individual project]

The disruption mapping brief wasn’t quite like any brief I had responded to before. I was quite confused and at a loss for a starting point upon beginning this project, I had no idea how to map a song. Doing a lot of research helped with this as I found that ‘mapping’ within design was much more popular than I had expected. I really liked the web site of the design Feltron and his books which recorded seemingly every fact from his entire year in one book. I found this quite fascinating. It was definitely an ‘I-wish-I’d-thought-of-that’ moments. The idea is just so unusual and quirky, it was quite amusing to see how in depth the reports went.

I found so many examples of mapping, it was almost too many. I couldn’t decide which direction to go in. My peers had such original ideas, like using ink dispersed in water or the movements of dance to map the sounds of the music. My grade for the restriction project reflected my need for improvement. Everything seemed to have been done before and I wanted to do something unique. I noticed in the final presentation that there were lots of similar pieces of work and some of the best maps looked very similar to images featured in Creative Review.

I changed direction at the last minute on this project which didn’t help me in some ways as it made my final piece very rushed. I do feel that it was far better than the work I had been doing previously using photos. Although it was a last minute decision, overall I feel it improved my final outcome. I also felt proud that I had come up with something really different and interesting. I enjoyed creating the images for my series and I feel they were an interesting outcome.
I was disappointed that my final presentation looked unfinished. They weren’t presented on mount board which would have improved the appearance of them. My feedback suggested I should have presented them really large to create a ‘WOW’ factor, which was a valid point. The book which I created as a key was lacking and could have been designed and produced far better. Looking back, it was not an effective way to present the key. I did enjoy this project and perhaps I did better than I gave myself credit for. For the exhibition in the second semester I submitted an A1 version of the teeth image. This looked much better than before and I was really proud of my work at this point.
